Supporting the Arts in Education
When the play “South Pacific” opens at Woodland High School in Cartersville next month, I will be there. Sure, the high school musical is a highlight of the school year for the students. But it’s more than that. As an engagement in the arts, it strengthens the young people’s capacity to learn, and creates positive outlets for their boundless energy and imagination.
Several of the children that have been a part of our home have been involved in the arts in all levels of education. Along with their enthusiasm, their joy and developing talent in rehearsing for and presenting these performances, I have also seen its contribution to their roles as productive and creative citizens.
One of our adopted children – who will remain nameless – is involved in this year’s play. This is in addition to his responsibilities as Class President, Chair for the Georgia Civil Air Patrol Cadet Advisory Council and Commander of the local CAP squadron. Beyond balancing their time and fulfilling their ongoing commitments, students participating in the arts are getting valuable experience in teamwork and in using individual talents as part of their united success.
Supporting the Arts is basic to education, and academic achievement is improved through the learning experience of acting, singing and band. Setting the example of this support, I have donated over the years to this program and will continue to do so as I have seen the results.
Take the time this year to go and see your local high school play. If you are in the Cartersville area on the 18th, 19th, 20th or 21st of February, drop by the Woodland High School Performing Arts Center and enjoy the show, which starts at 6:00 PM each night, except for the matinee on Sunday the 21st that starts at 1:00 PM.
