Educators ask Hayden Collins to speak

The Bartow County Association of Educators asked Hayden Collins to their March meeting to discuss problems facing the state’s teachers.

In addition to the shortfall in the state budget and its impact on teacher’s salaries, unpaid furlough days and the possible loss of jobs, the representatives of the BCAE voiced their concerns about improving the quality of education in Bartow County, reducing the drop out rate, and ensuring capable representation at the school board level.

Hayden Collins gave an update on the education bills currently being considered at the state capitol and how they will impact Bartow County.  The Senate is reviewing Georgia’s university system, and he spoke about the tough decisions they are facing in how to pay instructors’ salaries and provide adequate educational facilities in this economic crisis.  Rather than cutting departments and lowering Georgia’s education standards, Hayden sees the Board of Regents’ recommendation for an estimated 77% increase in tuition rates as a better strategy to hold the line on the state’s commitment to education opportunities.

Instead of focusing on the threats to their jobs, Hayden was impressed with the teachers’ concern for increasing education levels.  “Seeing these individuals in the trenches, doing the job of preparing our children for the future,” he commended them for their dedication.  The teacher who introduced Hayden noted his involvement over the years with the children who have been a part of his home.

Providing leadership in the face of these kind of challenges takes the willingness to fight to the nth degree.  Hayden Collins recognizes that kind of spirit in the teachers of Bartow County, and assured the teachers’ association members that he will represent their commitment as well as his own to the quality of education our community needs to uphold.

“There is important work to be done by all involved.  There is not a moment to lose.  Let’s be about it.”
