Hayden Collins has a field day with amateur radio club
Effective emergency service response relies on up-to-date communications. In a natural disaster, ham radio operators provide a critical link between responders and those in need, supporting Civil Air Patrol, Department of Defense, and EMA managers everywhere.
Events like Saturday’s field day for the Northwest Georgia Amateur Radio Club in Rome – part of the ARRL Field Day for ham radio operator clubs across the country – are a chance for members to demonstrate to local community organizations the role that amateur radio can play in an emergency situation.
Operators in Nome, Alaska checked in during Hayden Collins’ visit to the field day and the Northwest Georgia Public Health Emergency Command Center. When not helping with disasters, short wave radio operators offer educational programs, and operators can even speak to astronauts while in space. Hayden praised their support for emergency services and their enthusiasm for community programs.
