A smaller government advances liberty

Hayden Collins

The burden of taxes on the citizens of the state of Georgia have been multiplied by the federal government in such a manner that state government is struggling.

The current out-of-control government is growing bureaucrats like weeds, and they have now overtaken the private sector – so effectively that we almost have two government workers for every private sector worker.  The government doesn’t produce anything, and the policy of growing government stops production.  It is now time for the legislature to control the empire-building of government.

My teenaged son worked 40 hours in a 2 week pay period.  With the administration’s recent tax increases, on this paycheck he got to see the effect of the tax and he could not believe that he made more money at 35 hours than at 40 hours.

We haven’t a moment to lose, to start changing this out-of-control government objective into an objective of smaller government.  There is no better time than the present to discover the downfall of big government policy, big government taxes and big government bailout.  Ours will be the generation that recognizes how close to socialism America has come, and will be able to talk about it to the next generation.  In this generation, our leadership has to challenge the government growth pattern.

The private sector faces such challenges with fiscal responsibility and with innovation.   Being conservative with our assets, and knowing when enough is enough is as sound strategy for government as it is for business.

Our challenge now is finding the most effective way to run our community, with the least possible burden on our state and municipal budgets.  This will involve examining how we do business, and reorganizing longstanding structures and empires to reduce bureaucracy and redundancy.

The end result is a community that efficiently serves its people, without excessive taxes or fees.  A smaller, frugal government is attractive to new businesses, and supportive of the dedicated people who work hard to make this a great place to live.

Smaller government is a necessity.  Liberty must not be sacrificed.
